Helping at Jud Logan's Track Camp

I helped Jud at another one of his camps this summer as an Instructor. As usual, the campers enjoy watching an elite thrower compete... Or practice. So I delayed my practice until later in the day so the campers could watch. Every year they enjoy it!

Jud, who is always a classic emcee explains what is going on...

I know you can't see that well here, but this shows how the over 200 campers are dispersed to watch. Some are on the shaded hill, and others are sitting in the sun on the bleachers.

And we are about to begin!

Jud is directing the campers in a chant, "USA! USA! USA!"

Thanks, Jud, for a great time!

Speed Clinics in July

Ashland’s Kruger To Host Speed Clinics

Ashland University strength and conditioning coach A.G. Kruger is hosting a series of speed clinics at Ashland University’s Schar Athletic Complex. Kruger, a three-time Olympian, will be instructing participants on basic running techniques and form. He will also present drills to improve speed and quickness.

The clinics will be held on July 3, 10, 24 and 31 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Registration each day will take place in the lobby of the Troop Center. Cost is $20 per session per participant. These clinics are open to athletes from any sport and coaches and parents are welcome to stay and observe the clinics. In case of inclement weather, the clinics will be moved indoors to Conard Field House, which is located on the AU campus.

Questions can be directed to Kruger at 419-289-5936 or akruger@ashland.edu

Pictures from USA Outdoors

These are pictures that my wife took at the meet-

It was a sunny, hot day- 90-some degrees outside, 70% humidity, full sun at 5pm.

My son watching some practice throws...

Introductions. It was sunny... I was trying to keep the sun out of my eyes.

Flight 2 is about to begin.

But after all the athletes were done competing and had left the field, and all the spectators left to go watch other events, my son just wanted to stand and watch things from afar for a moment.

FOCUS

Dealing with multiple different athletes and also my own training, one main theme comes to mind when finding success- that is focus. Most people think it is something that happens only when you compete, but it is so much more than this. Focus needs to be a day in and day out thing, with everything you do.

If you are in school, it has to be about your studies because without passing grades you will not be able to compete or be eligible. Then besides that, it is about what you are doing to better yourself for your sport. Whether it is how you prepare each day for practice- which is not just showing up right before practice and going, or your effort every day at practice- not just going through the motions but giving your full effort for that day. Then it is also how you perceive practice, positive or negative, and then what you learn each day to progress yourself as an athlete. As a post collegiate athlete, what are you doing to optimize each day of practice? Sometimes that can be tough when you are not keeping your focus on your goal.

The thing I encourage is if you want to achieve something, you have to focus your life around this. I never have a problem with any athlete I work with if there is effort- that means there is focus. But as an athlete, if you do not want to bring focus and effort every day- why do you even do it? Start every day with a goal and focus to become great, for whatever level of athlete that is. Then you can end every day knowing you have done something great!
